This household chore ain't a chore no more

Santa promised something to make our lives a little easier, so we recently received one of those Roomba robots. I have to say there was some pretty stiff skepticism in the house, Mrs. Grumpy had even a little more than me. Now, we aren't afraid of new technology, but the idea of that little thing being able to do the job as good as us with our Hoover sounded a bit far-fetched. And to do it even while we weren't at home, humbug we thought. Boy, I haven't ever been so glad to be wrong. That little bugger is darn near heaven-sent. First off- it goes places we almost never went with our old fashioned vacuum. It fits right under most of the furniture, gets right up against the baseboards. On the wood floors it does a better job than any vacuum we've ever used. The best part is it does it with only a little bit of effort out of us. We just make sure it gets back on the charger, pick up a few cords and stuff off the floor, and empty the dust bin. Most of the time the little guy finds his way home on his own. I ain't often one to be gettin' so worked up about a household appliance, but something that made our lives a little easier is worth telling folks about. With this little fella running around I don't even know if I can call it a chore any more.

Can it negotiate on & off of area rugs? How about around chair legs... do you have to get the chairs up off the floor? I might just buy one if it can get itself on & off of rugs.

First off, it handles low pile, area rugs very very well. That and hard floors seem to make it quite happy. We had a rug that was almost a shag, and it didn't fare so well on that. Just like the cannister vacuum with a beater brush that we had, it tended to get caught up in the spinning parts. Also, a light throw rug, you know the kind that bunches up whenever someone walks on it a few times, tends to bunch up when the Roomba tries to clean it. As for the chair legs, we have a rather small dining room set. The Roomba has less than an inch of clearance to fit between the legs and every once in a while it finds its way under the table and into the "jail" formed by the chair legs. Only happened a few times since we've had it. I would imagine normal-sized dining room chairs wouldn't give it a problem at all. I'd say most times it finds it's way back to the charger, but occasionally we have to pick it up and put it back there. I feel I have to tell anyone that this here robot ain't Rosie from the Jetsons. I did some research and I reckon that some folks had unrealistic expectations, that they could just push the button once a week and forget about it. Mrs. Grumpy and I are finding that we are becoming Roombized so we are running it almost every day and our house seems much cleaner than when we vaccumed less often. For us it has really made our lives a lot easier.
